Commissioned by: Noise Singapore
Year: 2015

This year, National Arts Council is organizing an exhibition entitled The Noise Alumni Show 2015: Becoming of Age to gather selected Alumni of the previous Noise Singapore Series to commemorate their first decade. The selected artists are to respond to the theme of Becoming, in relation to how the artists perceive the world and nature within a more dynamic framework whereby nothing is constant except change and becoming. In the field of art and design, this dynamism is demonstrated in how one is willing to progress, experiment, adapt and evolve.

We are honored to be invited to participate in the inaugural alumni show, making us look back on how far we have developed since the time we first participated in Noise.

For thinkers, such as Greek philosopher Heraclitus, this concept is crucial to how we could perceive the world and nature within a more dynamic framework whereby nothing is constant except change and becoming. According to tradition, Heraclitus wrote a treatise about nature named 'About Nature,' which appears the famous aphorism - translated literally as 'the whole flows (as a river),' or figuratively as 'everything flows, nothing stands still.' The concept of Becoming in philosophy is connected with the two others: movement and evolution, as becoming assumes a 'changing to' and a 'moving toward.'

A typographic lenticular print was created to allow the viewer to either take a step back or move around the artwork in order to view its intended message. The viewer’s interaction with the work is a physical enactment of how the creative thought process for an artist is like. This is a process where nothing is constant and ideas have to flow until one finds the right direction.

Exhibition held at Galeri Nila & Utama @ The Foothills - Fort Canning Park. Opening ceremony graced by Minister for Culture, Community and Youth, Grace Fu.
